Great Presentation, Poor Story

Inkle’s presentation and gameplay mechanics are absolutely stellar. Unfortunately the material they chose to present is not. Steve Jackson simply cannot come up with an interesting or entertaining story to save his soul, and I’ve looked at numerous of his books. I wish that Inkle had chosen the Grail*Quest series instead, by J.H. Brennan. _His_ writing has a lot of character and humor, which Jackson’s does not. I’m glad I got this first installment just to see first-hand the wonderful gameplay and presentation that Inkle does, but I doubt very much that I’ll be continuing in this series. The story puts me to sleep.

I have fallen in love with inkle

I played 80 days, then I played this (actually, Im still playing 80 days) and these are my favorite games Ive played on the iPhone! Please keep up the good work!! Totally worth my money and time!

Way too short

Not even close to worth the money.

Great game

My type of game. Can rewind and replay any part you want so you can go with your gut and dont have to overthink anything. I really enjoyed it. I wonder why on earth anyone wouldnt grab the spell book in the beginning though...

Way too short

The game is fun with some replayability but for the price the game is too short to be worth it.

Stupid inescapable death

There is a scenario late in the game involving a witch that inevitably leads to death. This is due to taking away your options by disabling spell casting by saddling you with a companion you cant reject. Dumb.

Pure Awesomeness

This is the most awesome game ever! I couldnt stop playing it!! I love both of them and they are worth the money. I cant wait for the next one!

Awesome

An awesome mix of reading a book and a fantasy adventure that lets you choose your path with outcomes for each choice. A modern remake of a classic!

Original!

This game gives the appstore a breeze of fresh air. It combines storytelling, RPG and combat pretty flawlessly, loved it from start to finish, and i barely could put it down! Really looking forward to Kharé!

Very immersive

Maybe its the fantastic writing. Maybe its the opportunities to make your own decisions. Maybe its the feeling of consequence. Maybe its second-person narrative. Maybe its the sense of challenge and reward. Whatever the reason(s), Sorcery! has proven to be he most fun, immersive, and engaging game on my iPad. I just beat it and marked down my code to carry my save to Sorcery! 2, but before I do, I think Ill have another go at this one. There are so many options, I doubt Ill have anything close to a similar experience. 10/10

Bought the game. Love it!

Its great

Awesome! But a quick question...

Ok, so Ive always been a HUGE fab on choose-your-own-adventures, and fantasy, so there was little chance this game would strike out on me. I love that youre able to get so many different paths, and adored the second one as well. However, I have a question on this one. Im on my second play through, and had decided I was going to keep Jann. How does one do this??? If you go past Flanker, you have to use magic with the old lady, and I cant find my way through the black flowers...help!

Too short for what you pay.

I actually had this series of books as a kid so I jumped at the chance to buy this app. While the story and presentation are interesting I found the game to be a little too short $5 price tag. $1.99 or $2.99 wouldve been more fair in my opinion. This is especially true when you consider that the next story is also $5. So in order to have a full adventure youll end up spending at least $10 which is a pretty hefty price in the mobile app world. You can pick up 2 or 3 better games for that money.

Good concept. WAAAYYYY to short for $5

I like the choose-your-own adventure aspect. It brought back memories. Adding the ability to battle and the minor RPG elements added to the game. However, it was way to short for a $5 game. Even with starting completely over half way through, it still only took a few hours to get to the end. Theres theoretically replay ability because you can make different choices, but I didnt feel any desire to try to find a different way to the end after getting there once. It did make the game more fun to make a rule for myself not to use any of the options to rewind given after each choice, whether the choose turned out bad, good, or deadly. I bought this as part of a bundle. Based on the description, it seems like it might be longer. If so, Ill up my stars in my review for that game, but that doesnt change the fact that this game was too short for my money.

RIP OFF ! Very short game for 5 dollars

You cant finish unless you pay five dollars for the next section. This is a rip off. Section one is super short. ...finishes quickly.

Amazing Story Telling Game

Out of a hundred games I have played, this game is the best game in the App Store so far. Even though I have never finished playing it, there are a lot of exploration elements and puzzle solving. I definitely enjoy it and look forward for other similar games to be played.

"Short" but great

Game plays sort of like a Choose Your Own Adventure, and is executed very well. Combat feels less of an action sequence and more of a puzzle, which actually fits the theme really well. Game is short but provides tons of replay value as you try to find all the various secrets and paths you can take, along with providing a goal for it all - getting a really good character to bring into the sequel. Be warned that a lot of this game is reading. While I like it because it lets my mind visualize the environment, some may not.

Nostalgic and awesome!

I still have the original books from this series and seeing it come to life on my tablet is simply amazing. Truly captures the spirit of the original books for a new generation. Overall, a nice adaptation and very enjoyable for fans of the fighting fantasy genre.

Interesting Approach

I stumbled upon a review of the Sorcery 3 and the Sorcery series from Steve Jackson Games. I grew up with SJG (who remembers Car Wars!) and thought Id give this a try. As a kid, I remember reading the occasional "choose your path" type adventure books. I cant say that I though they were great. but I did enjoy them. I think the way SJG / Inkle appraoched making a smartphone app from the Sorcery series was acqually quite amazing. The combined reading an interactive decisions and pseudo-role playing was fun and enjoyable. I was surprised, however, how short the game was. For $4.99, it was far too short and not good value at all. Yes, it was an enjoyable experience, but my goodness Sorcery was over very quickly. Ive taken one star off because of that. The thing is, because of the poor value, I wont be buying the other chapters. The value proposition was just too low. yes, I enjoyed the game, but not enough to pay $4.99 for the next two chapters and beyond. My hats off to Inlke for their ingenuity. Id ask theyd rethink their pricing strategy, but im sure its working for them or else theyd have changed it by now. A nostalgic throwback and interesting but overpriced app. (if the story line was far longer and more immersive, thatd be a different outcome. But given how short it is, its just not worth the $.)

A Short but Fun Game

I enjoyed the game. It is text based. You read the story and choose what to do next. It takes between 2-3 hours to complete. Although I enjoyed the game, I wont be spending any more money on the next two games. Perhaps if they were only $2-3.
